QuickBase API Cookbook v3 - Recipe #88
Get messages from QuickBase to send to Twitter
twitter message
You want to enter messages in QuickBase and send them from there to Twitter.
require 'rubygems'
gem 'twitter4r', '>=0.3.0'
require 'twitter'

require 'QuickBaseClient'

print "Please enter your QuickBase username: "
quickbase_username = gets.chop
print "Please enter your QuickBase password: "
quickbase_password = gets.chop
qbc = QuickBase::Client.new(quickbase_username,quickbase_password)

dbid = qbc.findDBByName("Twitter messages (#{quickbase_username})" )
if dbid.nil?
    dbid = qbc.createDatabase("Twitter messages (#{quickbase_username})", "This is a list of messages from Twitter.")
    qbc.addField(dbid,"Twitter_Screen_Name", "text")
    qbc.addField(dbid,"Twitter_Message", "text")
else

  messagesToMoveToTwitter = []
  qbc.iterateRecords(dbid,["Record ID#","Twitter_Screen_Name","Twitter_Message"]){|record|
    p record
    if record["Twitter_Screen_Name"].nil? or record["Twitter_Screen_Name"] == "" and record["Twitter_Message"] and record["Twitter_Message"] != ""
      messagesToMoveToTwitter << record["Twitter_Message"]
      qbc.deleteRecord(dbid,record["Record ID#"])
    end
  }

  if messagesToMoveToTwitter.length > 0
    print "Please enter your Twitter username: "
    twitter_username = gets.chop
    print "Please enter your Twitter password: "
    twitter_password = gets.chop
    twitter_client = Twitter::Client.new(:login => twitter_username, :password => twitter_password )

    messagesToMoveToTwitter.each {|message|
      Twitter::Status.create(:text => message,:client => twitter_client)
    }

  end

end
This solution depends on the twitter4r Ruby API for Twitter.
It looks for messages in QuickBase that have no 'sender', sends them to Twitter, then removes them from QuickBase.
The messages will just be updates to your Twitter status.

When you bring additional fields into a conversion, Quickbase often finds inconsistencies. For example, say you're converting your Companies column into its own table. One company, Acme Corporation, has offices in New York, Dallas and Portland. So, when you add the City column to the conversion, Quickbase finds three different locations for Acme. A single value in the column you're converting can only match one value in any additional field. Quickbase needs you to clean up the extra cities before it can create your new table. To do so, you have one of two choices:

  • If you want to create three separate Acme records (Acme-New York, Acme-Dallas and Acme-Portland) click the Conform link at the top of the column.
  • If the dissimilar entries are mistakes (say Acme only has one office in New York and the other locations are data-entry errors) go back into your table and correct the inconsistencies—in this case, changing all locations to New York. Then try the conversion again.
