QuickBase API Cookbook v3 - Recipe #78
Make a web page with report links fixed on the left side
report links fixed html page
QuickBase Dashboards let you click on Report links on the left hand side of the screen, but clicking a report displays the report and the Reports links go off the screen.  The example code builds an HTML page with report links on the left that stay on the screen when you click them.  This can be a significant navigation improvement for some applications.
require 'QuickBaseClient'

qbc = QuickBase::Client.new

reportsHTML = ""
reportNames = qbc.getReportNames("8emtadvk")
reportNames.each{|reportName|
  report = qbc.lookupQueryByName(reportName)
  reportID = report.attributes["id"]
  reportsHTML << "<a href=\"https://www.quickbase.com/db/8emtadvk?a=q&qid=#{reportID}\" target=\"ReportContainer\" >#{reportName}</a><BR>"
}

html =   "<html>"
html << "<head>"
html << "<style type=\"text/css\">"
html << "td { white-space: nowrap; vertical-align: top }"
html << "</style>"
html << "</head>"
html << "<body>"
html << "<table border=\"1\" >"
html << "<tr><td><b>Community Forum Reports</b><td><td></tr>"
html << "<tr>"
html << "<td><b>"
html << reportsHTML
html << "</b></td>"
html << "<td>"
html << "<iframe name=\"ReportContainer\" Width=\"700\" Height=\"800\" />"
html << "</td>"
html << "</tr>"
html << "</table>"
html << "</body>"
html << "</html>"

File.open("QuickBaseCommunityForumReports.html","w"){|f|f.write(html)}
This example makes a web page for the QuickBase Community forum.  You can open the QuickBaseCommunityForumReports.html file to see the results.  The file you generate can be uploaded manually or automatically into QuickBase to create your own kind of Dashboard.

When you bring additional fields into a conversion, Quickbase often finds inconsistencies. For example, say you're converting your Companies column into its own table. One company, Acme Corporation, has offices in New York, Dallas and Portland. So, when you add the City column to the conversion, Quickbase finds three different locations for Acme. A single value in the column you're converting can only match one value in any additional field. Quickbase needs you to clean up the extra cities before it can create your new table. To do so, you have one of two choices:

  • If you want to create three separate Acme records (Acme-New York, Acme-Dallas and Acme-Portland) click the Conform link at the top of the column.
  • If the dissimilar entries are mistakes (say Acme only has one office in New York and the other locations are data-entry errors) go back into your table and correct the inconsistencies—in this case, changing all locations to New York. Then try the conversion again.
